As a kid, I grew up in a home surrounded by powerhouse cooks. The standard set by the women of my village for developing flavor, honoring patience as an ingredient, and using restraint as a sixth sense truly shaped my love for cooking and my curiosity for food and culture. My grandmother, the matriarch of our family, was the tops among them.
Sunday family meals, whether lunch after church or dinner, meant no matter what else was served, a roast chicken would be a part of the spread. Even as a young child I could sense how important that chicken was. It was perfect––golden brown crispy skin, insanely tender, and seasoned to the bone. The taste and smell of that yard bird is a memory I will always hold dear. It is a part of being in a way no other food memory is. I judge every roast chicken (and all food) by it.
When it came time to think of a name for my creative culinary consultancy, that memory came rushing back. I wanted a name that fully encompasses everything we are building by setting an unmovable standard of excellence and inspiring creativity. That’s the day The Sunday Bird was born.
